The design concept of the Shanghai Kingboard Center was to create an iconic structure that would establish a strong civic presence. The designers achieved this through a simple massing configuration and connection, creating a gateway that stands as a testament to modern architecture. The covered area under the sky exhibition hall defines a public realm connected to the water promenade, promising to attract people and create vitality during different seasons and times.
What sets the Shanghai Kingboard Center apart from other office spaces is its unique positioning as the gateway of the Hongqiao Airport transportation hub. The project is designed to generate synergy from public and commercial activities. The East and West Towers of the project are for office use and are connected by a "sky exhibition hall", a rigid connection structure that currently boasts the largest span and usable area in China.
The Shanghai Kingboard Center is a testament to Aedas' commitment to energy efficiency and high-performance equipment. The passive energy design of the project can achieve a 55.3% reduction in solar energy. The project also uses high-performance chillers with 13% higher COP efficiency, occupancy sensors, heat recovery, and solar thermal systems. At least 20% of the construction materials used have high recycled content, further emphasizing the project's commitment to sustainability.
The Shanghai Kingboard Center is not just an architectural marvel, but also a hub for green transportation. The site is highly accessible via a mature public transportation system and connected to the city highways. The generous open space is designed as a designated community space for the neighborhood to enjoy the greenery, landscape, and support various social activities.
The project faced several challenges, the most significant being the connected structure between the two towers. This 360° sky exhibition hall is a rigid connection structure with the largest span and largest usable area in China. The structure has a span of 72m, a usable area of over 6,000㎡, and a weight of 1,600 tons. Despite these challenges, Aedas successfully realized the project, further establishing their reputation as innovative architects.
For its innovative design and commitment to sustainability, the Shanghai Kingboard Center was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
